Abstract

This paper intends to point out the leading criteria and the methodological or practical questions, which brought to elaborate the Herla database of Mantova Capitale Europea dello Spettacolo foundation.
The Herla Project arises to collect the documentation related to the spectacular activity supported by the Gonzaga at the time of their maximum splendour (1480-1630). This kind of material, representing a conspicuous part of the entire world-wide documentation on Renaissance and Baroque spectacularity, is scattered all over the archives of Europe and of the Italian cities related with Mantuan Court at that time. Herla is the database in which these evidences are recorded with a brief abstract, some key words and a sequence of categories useful to simplify the research (on line on www.capitalespettacolo.it web-site).
The topic of the research on which the project is based, is meant in its widest sense: not only theatre examined in its literal sense (Court theatre, Commedia dell’Arte, Opera, Hebraic theatre), but also all the events which required stage setting – starting from sumptuous nuptial banquets, in which actors, dancers and musicians took part, up to triumphal entries, funeral honours, carnival masquerades, tourneys. They don’t need to be necessarily great spectacular events: very often some not so outstanding names, for instance such as those of the intermediaries between the Gonzaga family and some actors or musicians, reveal to be important links to reconstruct spectacle artists’ activity.
The multiplicity of the cases investigated is related with a remarkable diversification of the fonts examined: printed volumes of represented dramas; chronicles of envoys from other Courts; payments to craftsmen who made the scenarios; notarial deeds useful to reconstruct artists’ biographies; but above all a plentiful correspondence (between Court and comedians but also signed by academicians, writers, architects, musicians or sovereigns of other countries) which offers pieces of information about spectacular events in a wider sense.
A fundamental part of the job has been dedicated to setting out database and methodological criteria. With a collection of numerous documents samples, representing a variety of typologies, which allowed contemplating a range of cases as wide as possible, we devoted to check the program to set up each detail of the database and to get it to its final aspect.

Il Progetto Herla. Inventariamento della documentazione gonzaghesca italiana ed europea in materia di spettacolo (1480-1630).

Questo intervento si propone di mettere in luce i criteri guida e le questioni metodologiche e operative che hanno condotto all’elaborazione dell’archivio informatico Herla della Fondazione Mantova Capitale Europea dello Spettacolo.
Il Progetto Herla nasce al fine di raccogliere la documentazione sull’attività spettacolare patrocinata dai Gonzaga, nell’epoca del loro massimo splendore (1480-1630). Questo materiale, attualmente sparso negli archivi di tutta Europa e delle città italiane che all’epoca erano in relazione con la Corte mantovana, costituisce una parte considerevole dell’intera documentazione mondiale sulla spettacolarità rinascimentale e barocca. Herla è l’archivio informatico dove i reperti raccolti vengono schedati tramite un breve abstract, diverse parole chiave e una serie di categorie per facilitare la ricerca (è in parte consultabile sul sito www.capitalespettacolo.it).
L’oggetto d’indagine alla base del progetto è inteso nella più vasta accezione possibile: non solo il teatro in senso stretto (teatro di corte, Commedia dell’Arte, melodramma, teatro ebraico), ma anche tutti gli eventi che prevedevano un allestimento scenico – dai sontuosi banchetti nuziali con la partecipazione di attori, danzatori e musici, agli ingressi trionfali, alle celebrazioni funebri, ai mascheramenti per il carnevale, ai tornei. Non necessariamente si tratta di grandi eventi spettacolari: spesso nomi apparentemente meno rilevanti, per esempio quelli degli intermediari tra i Gonzaga e gli attori o i musicisti, si rivelano importanti anelli per la ricostruzione dell’attività degli artisti di spettacolo.
Alla molteplicità dei fenomeni indagati corrisponde una notevole diversificazione delle fonti considerate: volumi a stampa dei drammi rappresentati, cronache di inviati da altre corti, pagamenti agli artigiani che realizzavano le scene, atti notarili utili a ricostruire le biografie degli artisti; soprattutto una ricchissima corrispondenza (tra le corti e i comici, ma anche firmata da accademici, scrittori, architetti, musici, regnanti di altri paesi) che offre informazioni su eventi spettacolari in senso lato.
Una fase fondamentale del lavoro è stata dedicata all’impostazione del programma informatico archivistico e alla definizione dei criteri metodologici. Dopo aver raccolto numerosi documenti-campione che offrissero una varietà di tipologie, consentendo di prevedere una casistica il più ampia possibile, si è passati alla verifica del programma, per mettere a punto i dettagli del data base e giungere al suo aspetto definitivo.
