Abstract

Digitalisation may appear as the ideal solution for the problems related to the management of large performing arts collections. For most institutions collecting performing arts documentation, however, this is still a dream, and it is very unlikely to become true in the next future. Especially when dealing with large collections, we generally cannot afford the tremendous costs of an extensive digitalisation. Therefore, we are forced to make choices. We have to select the materials to be digitalised according to a list of priorities we often have to draw ourselves.
We have decided to start the digitalisation of a relative small, closed collection, the Petrolini Collection. We have made this decision while preparing an exhibition. Linking the different documents together, we have realized this collection is unique because of its consistency. All documents are related to Petrolini’s life, to his characters and plays, to his performances and tournées. This peculiarity makes the Petrolini collection the ideal object for digitalisation.
Ettore Petrolini was at the same time an actor and a playwright. His personality is very representative of the history of the Italian variety theatre during the first decades of the 20th century, but his innovative writing and acting influenced the comic theatre of the following decades.
Petrolini collected a large documentation about himself. After his death, his heirs came into possession of an important archive, containing an extensive documentation about the variety theatre of the first decades of the 20th century. Petrolini’s archive proved to be a valuable source of information: variety theatre was considered as a “minor” genre, and only a few documents were left to researchers.
In June 2001, the Petrolini Association donated the archives to the Burcardo Library. It was an important acquisition, completing the small collection two of Petrolini’s heirs had already donated in the Thirties.
The Petrolini collection is made of all kinds of documents. It counts more than 700 photos; a comprehensive collection of contracts, playbills, posters and press clippings; drawings, paintings and caricatures; manuscripts of plays and musical scores; sound recordings; letters Petrolini exchanged with actors, writers, journalists and politicians; costumes, accessories and props; medals, plates and other signs of honours.

La numérisation peut sembler la solution idéale des problème liés à la gestion des grandes collections des arts du spectacle. Pour la plupart des institutions, toutefois, elle reste un rêve qui peut être difficilement réalisé à cause des coûts formidables de la numérisation. Nous devons donc faire des choix, et sélectionner les matériels à numériser, selon une liste de priorités à établir.
Nous avons choisi de numériser une collection fermée et relativement petite, la collection Petrolini. Pendant les travaux préparatoires d’une exposition, nous nous sommes aperçu que cette collection était unique pour sa cohérence. Tous les documents sont liés à la vie de Petrolini, à ses personnages et à ses pièces, à ses spectacles et à ses tournées. Cette particularité fait de la collection Petrolini l’objet idéal pour la numérisation.
Ettore Petrolini fut en même temps acteur et auteur dramatique. Sa personnalité est bien représentative de l’histoire du variété italien des premières décennies du vingtième siècle, mais son écriture innovatrice et sa récitation ont influencé profondément le théâtre comique des années suivantes.
Petrolini recueillit une vaste documentation sur soi-même. Après sa mort, ses héritiers se trouvèrent en possession d’une archive très importante, qui contenait beaucoup de matériels sur le théâtre de variété, qui était considéré un genre mineur et qui avait laissé peu de documents à la disposition des chercheurs.
L’Association Petrolini a donné l’archive à la Bibliothèque du Burcardo en juillet 2001. Il s’agit d’une donation très importante, qui complète la petite collection déjà donné par deux héritiers aux années Trente.
La collection Petrolini est formée de toute sorte de documents. Elle comprend plus de 700 photos, un recueil exhaustif de contrats, affiches, coupures de presse ; une collection de dessins, peintures et caricatures ; les manuscrits des pièces et des partitions musicales, les enregistrements sonores, les lettres que Petrolini échangea avec acteurs, écrivains, journalistes, hommes politiques ; des costumes et des objets de scène .
