Abstract
Since March 7, 2002 the SIBMAS International Directory of Performing
Arts Collections and Institutions has officially been accessible on the internet. This is
the 5th version of this important reference work. (The first edition was edited by the
late André Veinstein and appeared in 1960.). In the last 40 years many changes have been
made both in the content and in the presentation. The online version tries to go beyond
the limitations of the printed volume and reflect the dynamic possibilities (and the
inherent pitfalls) of an online reference source. An examination of the migration process
will be given with extensive treatment of the considerations which were made in the
migration process. On the basis of the reactions which have been received since the
announcement of it’s presence, an initial evaluation of the impact the Directory might
have will be presented.
