Abstract
The new museology in Europe and the world has already rejected the
stereotypical idea of a museum as a kind of storing place, a stockroom for objects of art
and heirlooms, and has helped to turn some museums into lively, open places that foster
the atmosphere of polemics, taking an active part, together with other institutions, in
creating the cultural policy and launching various cultural trends in the community
instead of being ''passive'' exhibitional and ''consumer'' places.
However, even this should not make us satisfied: theatre art belongs to one moment, and
then it simply disappears – this makes it different from a painting, a book or a film.
So, what is to be done with the ''remains'' of a theatrical performance stored in the
museum when we know that they represent the sole material for researchers and future
reconstructions, and that they are a document about a time?
In this area, we can understand the important role of new technologies. In the Museum of
Theatre Art of Serbia we are developing a programme package for museum collections and the
national theatrical repertoire. This future documentation centre would represent the first
comprehensive database in the field of performing arts in Serbia.
