  1. During 1985 there have been five National Centres (France, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the Nordisk Centre) involving some 75 Members. In addition there are 29 Corresponding Members and 20 Associate Members.
  2. The extended operation of National Centres, in accordance with the aim of  the SIBMAS Rules, is to be welcomed: it will bring a useful co-ordination of work and activity within the individual countries and should add to the efficiency of the orgainsation on a global basis. It is hoped that the new membership structure to be considered by the General Assembly, and the revised subscription rates, will encourage the trend. There are some general observations:
    • National Centres should incorporate only institutions warranting the status of Corresponding Members. Associate Members should continue to subscribe separately and direct.
    • The value of the system and the administrative efficiency depends on the close liaison with the Secretariat to ensure established points of contact.
    • A decision should be taken that National Centres must be strictly National.

It is hoped, for instance, that the Scandinavian countries will each establish National Centres consisting of institutional members. This is no reflection on the admirable international liaison which has been created with the Nordisk Centre.

  3. The liaison of the Secretariat with the Hon. Treasurer in Berne continues to work smoothly. There are certain problems regarding the payment of subscriptions in Swiss Francs and, alternatively, the loss of income from the high conversion charges now exacted by Banks on cheques in other currencies.
