Dear colleagues and friends!
Probably most of you will have been informed already some time ago that
a continuous state of ill health forced me to resign from the SIBMAS
presidency earlier this year and made it impossible for me to continue
as the chairman of our association.
I took the decision to resign with sadness and with deep regret not, of
course, because of having been especially keen and ambitious about
holding the title of the President of an international organisation,
but first and above all, because this resignation meant that I would
have to stop doing a work that I liked to do despite of all the
responsibilities and the strain that were involved in this business;
and then also, because my resignation meant that it would keep me away
from being together and from working commonly with so many colleagues
and good friends that I have met since I became active in SIBMAS
affairs in 1978 at the Congress in Barcelona.
Moreover, I declared my resignation from the SIBMAS presidency with
regret because it was enforced on me in a moment when another
International Congress was being prepared, and when many things still
had to be done in the preparation work for the event. Here I now was
unable to offer my further help and my assistance to the organisers and
to those colleagues who had readily taken over the burden to be the
hosts for another convention of SIBMAS and of its members.
A chairman of an organisation as SIBMAS is, when his term of office
ends or when he resigns from his post, has the commitment to present a
report on his activities and an account of the decisions he has taken
during his acting time in order to explain and to justify what he has
done while he was in office.
I think that under the present circumstances you will agree with my
report being a very short one mentioning only a few points that I
consider to be of real importance in this respect.
Ever since I took over the SIBMAS presidency from the unforgotten Eva
Steinaa in New York in 1982, it has been my ambition to pursue mainly
two aims that seemed to be of some urgency with regard to the further
prosperous development of the association. First: I tried to give the
association a somewhat clearer profile in its organisation structure,
an aim which might help to recruit new members as an indispensable
condition for greater effectiveness when being involved in important
and ambitious projects like the Blue Book, the IBT, or WECT.
Then, my second aim was to ensure the continuation of the biannually
held International SIBMAS Congress as an important forum and necessary
platform for an effective cooperation of specialised institutions and
professionals in the field of libraries and museums of the performing
arts on an international level.
There were, I must admit, setbacks in the pursuit of this latter aim
as, for instance, the necessity to postpone the present 17th
International Congress for one year, from 1987 to 1988. This
postponement, however, gave me the opportunity to suggest a new outline
of the programme in the handling of the Congress as it has just been
carried out with the special help of our colleagues from the
Reiss-Museum in Mannheim and with the help of the West-German National
SIBMAS Centre. And I am especially happy to know that there is a good
prospect that now the biannual sequence of holding the SIBMAS Congress
can be maintained with the invitations that have come in from Sweden
and from Portugal for 1990 and 1992.
I do not know whether you all are satisfied with everything that has
been done in SIBMAS under my responsibility through the past six years,
whether you think the ways that were gone were the right ones and
whether the results of all my efforts really may be called a success.
It is totally up to you to decide on this question and to say whether
these ways should be followed furtheron in the years to come.
Of course, there are still many things left that have to be done in the
future, and I do assure you that there still were many ideas I had
about future activities and the further development of the association.
For me it is a sad and disappointing experience to know that, at least
for the time being, it is impossible for me to join you on the way that
you all, together with the new Executive that you are going to elect,
will decide to go and to offer you my help on this way.
However, I still hope that my retirement and my absence from your
community is not something that will have to last for ever. Some
improvement of my personal situation may yet be achieved and may give
me the chance for at least some kind of common future activity in our
special professional field.
I therefore strongly insist that you should not take this short report
and my words as a message of a final and definitive good-bye. Looking,
after all, into the future with much confidence and with optimism, I
honestly feel urged in this moment to thank you all for the good
cooperation and for your sincere friendship that I enjoyed so much
throughout all those years. This truly is a great experience which I
clearly take as an invaluable gain in the whole of my professional
career as well as in my private life.
Thank you!
