17. Internationaler SIBMAS-Kongreß / 17ème
Congrès International de la SIBMAS / 17th International SIBMAS
Congress, 1.-9. September 1988, Mannheim
Bericht / Actes / Documentation. Red.: Liselotte Homering.
Mannheim : Städtisches Reiß-Museum, 1990. p. 202
- The report shows the position regarding membership as at
the 31st
August 1988:
National Centres: 5, Austria, France, Federal Republic
of
Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom. Involving a total of 62
Members.
Members: 100, including 38 who subscribe direct of
whom 7 have
not yet renewed their subscription for 1988.
Associate Members: 35, of which 13 are included under
the
umbrella of their relevant National Centre. Of the
balance of 22
Associate Members who subscribe direct, 6 have not yet renewed their
subscription for 1988.
- The establishment of National Centres would seem to be
working
satisfactorily in four of the countries involved. This is an advantage
in
many ways as was underlined in the Report for 1985: it can bring a
useful
co-ordination of work and activity within the individual countries and
adds
to the efficiency of the organisation on a global basis. It reduces
considerably the administrative work of the Secretariat, by devolving
the
responsibility for chasing subscriptions, and of the Treasurer by
simplifying
the payment of those subscriptions.
- A slight confusion has resulted by the inclusion of
Associate Members
within the framework of the National Centres. This was not intended
when the
Constitution was revised but is a natural development. For example, in
the
case of the National Centre of the United Kingdom the individuals who
wish to
join as Associate Members are invited to participate in the periodic
meetings
because of their expertise in the field of Librarianship. Their
subscriptions
are collected within the National Centre and forwarded in bulk to the
Treasurer. If this practice is carefully followed in all cases no
damage can
be done to the structure of the Association.
- The liaison with the Hon. Treasurer in Berne continues to
work
smoothly, and it is thought that the payments made by the National
Centres in
bulk alleviates many of the problems arising from individual conversion
charges.
- The liaison of the Secretariat with Mr. Eric Alexander in
the
Netherlands is similarly close and amiable. Thanks are due to him, and
to Ms.
Liliana Alexandrescu, for the maintenance of accurate membership
records and
for the excellent standards of the SIBMAS/FIRT Bulletin. The Bulletin
is the
only tangible return received by Members for their support, and there
is
evidence from many sources that its receipt is regarded as invaluable.
It
makes an important contribution internationally as a source of
information.
