Progress so far:

A single-sheet insert has been circulated through Theatre Notebook (cost c. £ 30). In addition, an advertisement is to appear in the American periodical Bandwagon (the journal of the Circus Historical Association) at a cost of 50 dollars.

To date, 33 orders have been received (plus a further order for 7 copies if trade terms can be offered).

It seems likely that orders could reach 150 if suitable pre-publication advertising could be employed which would reach librarians. An appropriate medium for this is the British National Bibliography (BNB). This is issued weekly and is circulated to c. 2,700 libraries (mainly in the U.K., plus major overseas libraries). The cost of inserting a single-page sheet would be £ 195 plus the cost of photocopying the inserts. BNB has the advantage of being read by most acquisitions librarians who use it to do their book selection.

An alternative approach would be to purchase a set of address labels for U. K. public and academic libraries. The cost of this would be £80 plus the cost of photocopying the sheets, plus stationery and postage, plus the cost of labour. As a reminder, below are details upon which our original costing was based:

For a print-run of 600 copies:

£ 3,200 (not including typesetting) cost per copy £ 5.33

The published price will be £ 21 plus a charge of £ 4 for postage and packing.

In order to cover these basic costs, it would be necessary to sell 133 copies; however, to cover costs of postage and packing, advertising, staff to despatch copies, and so on, we will need firm orders for at least 150 copies.
