When the Circus Committee meeting of the SIBMAS congress was supposed to take place, all the could-be-members, by for them obvious reasons, had joined other committee meetings, where they were taking part in verbal discussions, personal intriguing and other adrenalin-creating procedures, and I suddenly found myself in splendid isolation as the only member of the Circus Committee.

In that situation there was no discussion about who should be the chairman and the secretary of the meeting.

Those procedures quickly finished, the whole meeting decided with acclamation to use the time spared from verbal discussions to form an investigation team consisting of all partaking members to document the famous circus building of COLISEU in central Lisbon. Under the eminent and professional guidance of the architect and artist José Manuel Castanheira, the whole group of observant eyes managed to force the locked doors of COLISEU and get inside carrying all camera equipment needed for a solemn documentation. The one hundred year old building of COLISEU was, as so many other cultural buildings in the present Portugal, closed for reconstruction and the performing artists were perhaps performing in more simple circus constructions reconstructed for every performance.
COLISEU was really an imposing circus building with the echoes of one hundred years of different performances in the arena or on the big stage. The building stood there in a good state and with the same simple and perfect stage- and seating-arrangements as when newly built. The entire Circus Committee joined in a quick prayer that not to much of that should be destroyed in the reconstruction. The gentle stage-manager did put on all the light that was needed for the photographic documentation and also provided a worn copy of Ricardo Covöes "0 Cinquentenario do Coliseu dos Recreios" printed to celebrate the moment when the building was halfway to what it is today.
I later found the book in the library of the Cirkus-Akademi in Stockholm and will use it to complete the more detailed report that will be sent to all the members of this Circus Committee meeting.
