The Congress
SIBMAS' nineteenth World Congress took place in Lisbon on 7-11 September 1992. It was
hosted and arranged by the National Theatre Museum, but the Congress was held at the
Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
It was funding support from the State Secretary of Cultural Affairs and the Portuguese
Institute of Museums; Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation; Eugénio de Almeida Foundation -
(Évora), Lisbon City Council, Évora City Council and Portuguese Society of Authors.
Taking part in the Congress were 68 delegates from 20 countries.
Mrs. Simonetta Luz Afonso, Director of the Portuguese Institute of Museums, opened the
Congress on Monday 7th September.
The invited lecturers, Mlle. Cécile Giteau, Dr. Luiz Francisco Rebello, Mrs. Lisbeth
Grandjean, Prof.a Margarida Acciaiuoli and Prof. José Oliveira Barata, opened the
Congress proceedings, which then continued with the following programme:
Monday (13:00) Lunch at the Centre of Modern Art Restaurant, offered by the
ACARTE/Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
(15:00): Papers by Joseph-Angel Gomez, Tomek Kitlinki (the lecture was delivered by Manuel
Pérez) and Manuel Pérez.
(18:00) A visit to the National Theatre Museum, followed by a reception.
Tuesday (9:30) Papers by Richard Buck, Jane Pritchard, Gaby Wijers and Willem Rodenhuis.
(13:00) Lunch offered by the Lisbon City Council.
(14:00) Papers by André Veinstein, Marie-Françoise Christout, Nöelle Guibert, Nicole
Leclercq and Marie-Claude Billard.
Wednesday (8:30) As it is traditional at SIBMAS' congresses, Wednesday was devoted
entirely to an excursion and social activity. The participants travelled by bus to Évora
where they visited the historical places of the town and the Garcia de Resende Theatre.
Thursday (9:30) Reunion of the permanent committee.
(13:00) Lunch at the São Luiz Municipal Theatre offered by the Lisbon City Council.
(14:30) A visit to the São Carlos National Theatre (Opera House) and to the D. Maria II
National Theatre.
Friday (9:30) General Assembly of SIBMAS. Closing of the Congress.
(13:00) Lunch offered by the Portuguese Society of Authors.
Secretariat of the Congress: Madalena Parreira, Margarida Bicas, Margarida Palhinha,
Catarina Moura, Guida Bruno and Paulo Jorge Fonseca.
To the printing of the Congress proceedings, most of the typing was done by Guida Bruno
and a large part of the material was proof-read by João Luis Moura and Margarida
Palhinha.
