In the Russian State Arts Library there has been formed a specialised task group working on the bibliografic reference book The Plays in Russia. XVIII-XXth Centuries. This must be the first bibliografic index being created on the computer data base. The authors had to make a number of theoretical and methodological decisions in order to work on the data base.

The descriptions of the published plays issued as separate books as well as those which were published in the magazines are put into the data base. The aspiration of restoring the whole amount of the Russian plays has made it necessary to make analytical entries of the serials. The problem of the researchers is in the fact that not all the magazines which had published plays have been revealed.

Relatively simple is the work with such well-processed specialised magazines as Artist, The repertoire of the Russian Theatre, The Pantheon of Russian and all European Theatres, The Russian Stage and others. But much work is to be done to make analytical entries of the theatre almanachs. Such publications as Altsiona, The Almanach of Meses, Bucket, The Home Theatre, Propileye, Russkaya Taliya, Teatr and some others are to be studied. The primary card file comprises 60 titles. It was typical of the Russian theatre to perform works which had been published but which existed sometimes only in manuscripts and copies prepared for art directors and actors. In this connection the retrospective registration of books as bearers of drama texts has given rise to the problem of a manuscript as a book. The necessity of combining the scientific description of manuscripts and books in one and the same data base has caused a number of difficulties.

Especially of great difficulty is the description of the so-called "secondary" plays. These are the plays written on the borrowed plots of the works, alterations, interpretations and different treatments.

The information about the plays from the stocks and collections of our library was put into the computer. At the next stage additional information on the stocks of other libraries holding a considerable amount of theatre materials will be put in. These libraries are the St. Petersburg Theatre Library and the Bachrushin Museum. The information on the stocks of the Russian State Library (the former USSR State Lenin Library) and the Russian National Library (The Public Library) has already been included into the data base. Searching the plays in the cencorship stocks in the main archives of the country has also been started.
