Exhibition: In the Privacy of One’s Home Paper Theatre
A Bourgeois Passion
A fashion originating from England brought the « boards that mean the world » into XIXth century Austrian drawing rooms. Families enthusiastic about theatre assembled miniature stages complete with props and figurines from cut-out sheets readily available from stationery stores. The exhibition staged by the Theatermuseum Wien highlights that those miniature stages perfectly recreated the illusion of depth and space of a real stage. They allowed theatre aficionados to re-play the repertory of the great theatres and opera houses of the day.
