Exhibition: In the Privacy of One’s Home Paper Theatre

February 27, 2017

A Bourgeois Passion

A fashion originating from England brought the “boards that mean the world” into XIXth century Austrian drawing rooms. Families enthusiastic about theatre assembled miniature stages complete with props and figurines from cut-out sheets readily available from stationery stores. The exhibition staged by the Theatermuseum Wien highlights that those miniature stages perfectly recreated the illusion of depth and space of a real stage. They allowed theatre aficionados to re-play the repertory of the great theatres and opera houses of the day.
